They cheered as I entered the coffee shop.
As if I were someone famous!
I had a meeting at a local coffee shop near my house.
I walked in the door and right in front of me was a table of five people with computers looking up – and excited to see ME!
- They waved and greeted me.
- I had NO IDEA who they were!
- My confusion must have shown on my face.
One woman asked, “Aren’t you meeting with us?”
I laughed and shared that I was meeting just one person.
The woman behind me laughed even more – “I’m the person you are looking for!”
My improv training kicked in…
- I thanked the table for making me feel so special and welcome.
- A few of them affirmed that I was special – and had cute shoes!
It didn’t stop there.
When I went to the counter to get my drink, the barista insisted it was on the house.
(She thought I was famous.)
My appointment arrived.
We got into our conversation.
The table that greeted me left about an hour later.
As they filed past me, most of them made a big deal about saying goodbye to me – as if I was part of their team.
It was a funny, special moment.
Makes me think of people who (used to) hate networking…when you meet someone new, do they feel welcomed like a VIP – and leave your conversation smiling?
